What a screen reader hears

Before the fix, a screen reader says:

  • Image. The photo has no description.
  • Linen throw, oatmeal, £48.
  • Button. The basket icon has no name.
  • Link, click here. It doesn’t say where it goes.

Why it matters

Many online stores can’t be used by people who are blind, have low vision or can’t use a mouse.

These shoppers use screen readers, zoom or just a keyboard. If a button has no name, or a menu can’t be opened without a mouse, they can’t finish buying. So they leave, and they rarely tell you why.

There’s a legal side too. In the US, most website accessibility lawsuits under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are brought against online stores. And the European Accessibility Act applies to many businesses that sell to customers in the EU, including UK stores, with an exemption for the very smallest.

I’m not a lawyer, and this isn’t legal advice. But fixing these problems helps your customers whatever the law says.

How it works

  1. A free automated check

I test your homepage, a collection and a product page on desktop and mobile. You get a short report in plain English: what’s wrong, where it is and who it affects.

  2. I fix your theme

I fix the code on an unpublished copy of your theme, so your live store is never touched. You preview the changes, and when you’re happy, you publish it.

  3. Monthly monitoring

Theme updates and new apps can bring new problems. Each month I check your store again and tell you about anything new, so small problems don’t pile up.

An honest note: automated testing finds only some accessibility issues, not all of them. I’ll tell you what the tests can’t check, and I’ll never promise more than the work can deliver.

What the free report looks like

Two pages. A summary, the main problems in plain English, and what each one means for your customers.

First page of an example report. The store scored 68 out of 100, with 4 types of issue found in 12 places: 2 critical and 2 serious. Below that, the top issues are explained in plain English, starting with ‘Buttons have no name’ and ‘Images have no text description’, each beside a screenshot of the store with the problem outlined in red.
Part of a real report from one of my automated checks. The store’s name and web address have been changed, and each screenshot is blurred except for the problem outlined in red. Automated testing catches only part of all accessibility problems.
